Poetry

Driving Question: What make poetry memorable?

I found that having a driving question helped me to keep focused on what I wanted the children to do. Yes, the anticipated learning did occur. I planned on teaching the students about various kinds of poetry (haiku, limerick, cinquain, couplet and acrostic poems). The students learned a few different poets. Also, the students learned about microsoft word and how to change the font size, color and add clipart.

Project Description:

About 5-10 students will work on being exposed to poetry through technology. The students will learn about all different types of poems. The students will create a poem about their biography character.

Why? The students will gain exposure about poems and poets. The students will have the opportunity to create an information piece of writing about their biography character. They will also learn how to use technology and navigate through various websites. The students will also be able to type and create a word document.

Students will understand…
A poem is a piece of writing that is characterized by particular elements
Writers use tools and processes to bring ideas into a final product
Poetry is relevant to their lives
Poems are meant to be heard
There are many different poets and poetry
How to navigate through various poetry websites
Voicethreads and how to read and comment on poems
How to cut, paste, save and use Microsoft word to type their poems

Reflection:

I really enjoyed working on this project. Thank Andy for assisting me in understanding how to use different sites. The students really seemed to be engaged by using the netbooks and playing around with poetry websites. The students seemed excited to use voicethreads and see their own piece of writing on the website. The students typed their poems about a biography character and put in on voicethreads. The students read their poems into voicethreads. I am hoping that the students will be able to comment on their own poem and other poems. Also, using voicethreads I wanted to ask the students what types of poetry the learned about and name some poets. I used easy tech to help the students gain keyboarding and database concepts. I also had the students listen to youtube videos on Shel Silverstein and Jack Prelutsky to become familar with poets and various types of poetry. Then, I used other videos from youtube and mediaconnect to introduce haiku and limerick poems. I taught the students how to use microsoft word (changing the font size, font color and adding clipart). Then, I uploaded the students poems onto voicethreads. Through voicethreads the students read their poems. The students will be commenting on their own poems along with poems made by second graders. I learned a lot about voicethreads and linking various websites to my wikispaces. I really enjoy having a wikispace where I can share videos and other websites.
